Bobby Jones Bests Modified Field at Sundance
Compared to his first career Modified win earlier in the season,
Lehighton’s Bobby Jones had his work cut out for him Sunday at Sundance
Vacations Speedway. With an impressive outing, Jones held off Matt Hirschman
and Rusty Smith to earn his second win of the season. Driving to the front
in a hurry, Joe Hoffman wasted no time and cruised to the checkers in the
Late Model division. With their first wins this season, a pair of Street
Stock victories was split between Chip Wanamaker and Todd Barbush. Wayne
Lowe notched his first Factory Stock win of the season and Scott Hubler
scored his fourth INEX Legends win of the year.
Twenty cars lined up for the start of the 40-lap Modified main event and
polesitter, Nick Pecko, led the opening laps over Todd Baer, Barry Callavini,
Kyle Ebersole and Bobby Jones.
The red flag waved when Amber Levandowski got out of shape in turn four.
Trying to get the car righted, she came across the track and collected Lenny
Fischer and Paul Skodachek. Skodachek hit the front stretch wall very hard
with the driver’s side of the car, but luckily he did not appear to be
injured.
Green flag racing resumed and Callavini overtook Pecko for the race lead.
Jones followed through as well and on the following lap he challenged
Callavini for the top spot.
Very quietly, Matt Hirschman, Rusty Smith and Brian DeFebo began to work
toward the front of the field. On lap 13 Hirschman got by Callavini for the
runner-up spot. Meanwhile, Smith and Hirschman rounded out the top five.
The caution flew on lap 23 when Brian Romig, Geary Rinehimer, Jr. and Jim
Bojohnny tangled in turn two. Callavini surrendered the third spot and took
his mount pit side.
Jones held off his competition once green flag racing resumed. Hirschman
tried to gain on the leader and Smith waited for Hirschman to slip up so
that he could jump into second. DeFebo held fourth, followed by Kyle
Ebersole.
DeFebo’s day came to a quick end on lap 29 when his car began to overheat.
The exchange moved Pecko back into the top five.
Despite the talent behind him, Jones stayed out front and took his second
victory of the season over Hirschman, Smith, Ebersole and Pecko.
Heat race victories went to Kyle Ebersole, Nick Pecko and Geary Rinehimer,
Jr.
Kyle Harvell started on the pole and led the opening circuit of the 30-lap
Late Model feature before the caution flew when Jerry Hildebrand and
Jennifer Kutz tangled in turns three and four.
Green flag racing resumed and sixth place starter, Joe Hoffman, overtook
Harvell. Mike Sweeney followed in second, followed by Zane Zeiner.
Hoffman, of Drums, cruised to his second win of the season over Sweeney,
Zeiner, Harvell and Austin Kochenash.
Joe Hoffman and Zane Zeiner were heat race winners.
The Street Stocks picked up from lap six of a feature that was rained out on
August 8. Todd Barbush restarted the event as the leader. Chip Wanamaker
lined up in second and quickly took the race lead when the green flag
dropped.
Wanamaker, of Walnutport, drover off to take the checkers over Joe Barbush,
Todd Barbush, Brad Barbush and Richie DiMarco.
Mike Shadder grabbed the race lead from polesitter, Jeff McGrath at the
start in the regularly scheduled 25-lap Street Stock feature.
Harry Sager moved into second and overtook Todd Barbush for second on the
second lap. Three laps later Sager made an outside pass on Shadder stick and
took the race lead.
The caution waved on lap six when Chip Wanamaker checked up to avoid traffic
ahead of him and was tagged by Zane Zeiner. Both Brad Barbush and Steve
Shultz also got a piece of the incident.
Sager continued to lead with 11 laps complete, over T. Barbush, Joe Barbush,
Steve Clark and Richie DiMarco.
T. Barbush retook the race lead with six laps remaining. Meanwhile, Sager
experienced some sort of mechanical issue and was forced to retire from the
event.
With his brother, Joe right behind, T. Barbush of Drums, went on to take his
first checkered flag of the season. Clark finished in the third spot,
followed by Shultz and Brian Wozniak.
The win marks a very special time for the Barbush family, as each of the
three brothers has one at least one feature in Street Stock competition this
season.
Street Stock qualifiers went to Steve Shultz, Steve Clark and Richie DiMarco.
Brad Barbush was the consi winner.
Wayne Lowe started from the pole and took the early lead in the 20-lap
Factory Stock feature. Uncontested throughout, Lowe, of Mountain Top,
cruised to his first win of the season. Jay Gould, Mike Moyer, Jr, Bob Wink
and Brian Brown completed the top five.
Jeff Searfoss and Wayne Lowe were heat race winners.
Karl Heisler sat on the pole for the start of the 20-lap INEX Legends
feature and was overtaken by Scott Hubler when the green flag flew.
Hubler was heavily pursued by Roger Coss, Mike Alcaro and Kevin Nowak during
the early going until Alcaro and Coss tangled with three laps remaining.
Green flag racing resumed and Hubler drove off to his fourth victory of the
season over Nowak, Mark Tischler, Coss and Heisler.
Scott Hubler and Karl Heisler were heat race winners.
The Atlantic Coast Old Timers were also on hand for the afternoon and Carl
Fink brought his car to victory lane in the 12-lap exhibition event.
